Whiteway sets scoring record for one season

BILLERICA — Junior attackman Grant Whiteway set the state’s single-season scoring record while leading Billerica past Needham, 15-7, in a Division 1 East boys lacrosse quarterfinal last night at Calabrese Stadium.

Whiteway had 9 goals and 1 assist last night, raising his seasonal totals to 110 goals and 56 assists. Whiteway’s 166 points eclipses the previous state record of 165 points by former Duxbury star Max Quinzani, who recently helped Duke University to its first national title.

No. 4 seed Billerica (20-3) will play at No. 1 Duxbury (21-1) in a Division 1 semifinal on Saturday (3 p.m.). Duxbury defeated Billerica 9-6 earlier this season.

Sophomore attackman Cam Slatton had 4 goals and 5 assists last night for the Indians.

Ben Mellaugh had 1 goal and 2 assists. Ross Murphy had 1 goal and 1 assist.

Justin Fritz scored 1 goal. Dylan Fernandes and Jim Holland each had 1 assist.

Solid defensively were Ian Abrahamson, Mike Curley, Sean Dougherty and Tom McLaughlin.

Starting goalie D.J. Smith made 15 saves over the first three quarters. Dylan Svenson made 2 saves in the fourth quarter.
